The No Contact Rule (Psychic Perspective)

What I notice energetically when contact stops — when it helps, when it backfires, and how to use it to heal.

By Ashly Andrews

The no contact rule gets talked about like a magic trick: stop texting for thirty days and they'll come running back. I don't see it that way. In my readings, no contact is less about the other person and more about getting your own energy back. When it's used for that reason, it can be one of the most healing things you do after a breakup.

What I notice when contact stops

When someone keeps reaching out to an ex — checking stories, sending "just wondering how you are" texts — I feel their energy stretched thin, like a rope pulled tight between two people. Nothing new can grow while that rope is taut. When contact stops, the rope slackens. People start sleeping better, thinking more clearly, and remembering who they were before the relationship.

What I most often notice is that the other person feels the shift too. Not because of a trick, but because you've stopped pouring energy toward them.

When no contact helps

It tends to help most when the relationship had a push-pull pattern, when you keep losing yourself in replaying conversations, or when you can't think clearly about what you actually want. It's also important when a relationship was unhealthy — in that case, distance is about safety and self-respect, not strategy.

When it backfires

No contact used as a game usually backfires. If you're counting days, posting things for them to see, or waiting for the exact moment to "win," you're still in contact energetically. The other person often senses that pressure. And there are situations — shared children, shared work — where full no contact isn't realistic. There, I suggest "low contact": polite, brief, and only about what's necessary.

How to do it well

Decide on a time frame that's about you, not them. Mute or archive instead of deleting if that feels gentler. Tell one trusted friend so you have support when the urge hits. Fill the space you've freed with things that bring you back to yourself — movement, creativity, people who make you laugh.

If you keep thinking about them anyway, that's normal. I go into why in why can't I stop thinking about my ex. And if the pull feels almost physical, it may be worth reading about soul ties.

What if they reach out?

Sometimes they do. Before you reply, ask yourself whether you're responding from a calm place or from relief. If anything has genuinely changed, it will still be true tomorrow. If you notice angel number 999 during this time, I see it as a reminder to let old chapters close rather than a sign about any one person.

Common mistakes I see

The most common mistake is breaking no contact during a lonely moment, usually late at night, and then feeling like you've ruined everything. You haven't. Simply start again, without punishing yourself. Another is replacing direct contact with indirect contact: watching their stories, asking mutual friends about them, or posting things you hope they'll see. Energetically, that keeps you just as tied to them.

A third mistake is treating the end of no contact like a deadline. People circle day thirty on the calendar and plan the perfect message. By then, ideally, you'll feel calmer and clearer, and you may realize you don't want to send anything at all. That's not losing. That's what healing looks like. If you do decide to reach out later, keep it simple and honest, with no expectations attached. Whatever happens next, you'll be responding from a steadier place than when the breakup was fresh.

Getting a clearer picture

I can't promise anyone an ex will return, and I won't. What I can do in a will my ex come back reading is tell you honestly what I see in the connection right now — and whether your energy is better spent elsewhere. If you'd like me to look at your situation personally, text 415-215-8598 with your first name and your question. I'll confirm a time, often the same day.
